Installation Notes
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Time: 2–3 hours (with timing belt kit)

Disconnect the battery negative terminal and wait 10 minutes for the system to discharge.

Remove the serpentine belt, idler pulleys, and timing cover to access the timing belt and tensioner assembly.

Loosen the tensioner mounting bolt with a spanner or socket. Do not remove completely.

Release tension by gently rotating the tensioner housing counter-clockwise until the belt can be slipped off freely.

Remove the old tensioner completely by unbolting from the cylinder head.

Install the new tensioner into the same mounting location and hand-tighten the bolt.

Re-thread the timing belt over the new tensioner pulley, ensuring it sits flat and centred.

Apply the proper tensioning torque (refer to workshop manual: typically 45 Nm) and verify belt alignment at top dead centre (TDC).
- Reinstall the timing cover, idler pulleys, and serpentine belt.

Reconnect the battery, start the engine, and listen for smooth, quiet operation at idle.
⚠️ Important: This job is best performed as part of a complete timing belt service. If your timing belt is over 10 years old or 100,000 miles, replace the belt, all idler pulleys, and the water pump at the same time. A tensioner-only replacement is false economy if the belt fails shortly after.
