Overview
The upper engine mount torque strut is a critical drivetrain isolation component found on Land Rover Freelander 2, Range Rover Evoque, Discovery Sport, and select Volvo models (S60, S80, V70, XC60, XC70). This single strut brackets the engine from above, absorbing vibration and controlling movement during acceleration and deceleration.
Over time, OEM rubber elements degrade, causing audible clunking, increased cabin vibration, and engine movement under load. This Partsmost replacement restores factory isolation with new aluminum and elastomer construction, exact fitment geometry, and OEM part number compatibility across multiple vehicle platforms.
Built to original equipment specifications, this strut matches the exact mounting points, bushing diameter, and load rating of the factory unit. Installation requires basic hand tools and 30–45 minutes per vehicle. Recommended for owners who hear engine knock during gear changes or notice excess movement in the engine bay.

Installation Notes
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Est. Time: 30–45 minutes
-
Disconnect the negative battery terminal to disable the engine management system and avoid accidental component movement.
-
Safely support the engine using a jack and wooden block under the sump, or a engine hoist, to unload the mount during removal.
-
Locate the upper torque strut mounting bracket above the engine at the cylinder head, visible from the top of the bay on most models.
-
Remove the upper mounting bolt (typically 18 mm socket) connecting the strut to the engine block or head, then the lower bracket bolts securing it to the chassis frame.
-
Withdraw the old strut assembly and inspect the mounting points for corrosion or damage; clean with a wire brush if needed.
-
Position the new strut into the mounting brackets, ensuring alignment with the rubber bush facing the correct direction (away from moving parts).
-
Install new fasteners hand-tight first, then torque in sequence: upper engine bolt to 48 Nm, lower chassis bolts to 55 Nm, and the strut-to-bracket bolt to 42 Nm using a calibrated torque wrench.
-
Carefully lower the engine support onto the new strut and verify all fasteners remain tight after settling.
-
Reconnect the battery terminal and start the engine; listen for any abnormal clunking or vibration before returning to normal use.
-
Road test under gentle acceleration and deceleration to confirm smooth, isolated engine movement with no knocking from the bay.
⚠ Important: Do not attempt to reuse old rubber bushings or fasteners. Always torque to specification—under-torqued struts will rattle; over-torqued can crack the aluminum body. If you hear engine knock after installation, stop immediately and recheck all bolt tensions and bush orientation. Engine support failure during work can cause serious injury; use proper lifting equipment and safety stands only.
