Installation Notes
Difficulty Level: Intermediate to Advanced
Estimated Time: 90–120 minutes (both struts, both sides)

Disconnect the 12V battery negative terminal. Wait 5 minutes for residual power discharge.

Open the tailgate fully and support it with a padded jack or stand. Never work under an unsupported tailgate.

Locate the strut attachment points: upper tower (liftgate frame) and lower bracket (vehicle body frame).

Disconnect the electrical connector at the strut base. Press the release tab gently; do not force.

Remove the upper retaining bolt (13 mm socket, torque spec: 21 Nm / 15 lb-ft). Keep the tailgate supported.

Remove the lower retaining bolt (same spec). Carefully withdraw the spent strut downward.

Install the new strut: align the lower bracket first, insert the upper tower pin, and hand-tighten both bolts.

Torque both bolts to 21 Nm in a cross pattern to ensure even load distribution.

Reconnect the electrical connector: insert straight in until the clip engages with an audible click.

Repeat steps 2–9 for the opposite side. Both struts must be replaced as a pair.

Reconnect the 12V battery. Test the power liftgate from the interior switch. If the gate does not open smoothly or stops mid-travel, disconnect the battery and contact a certified BMW technician.
⚠️ Important: These struts are electrically active and contain pressurized gas. Do not attempt to disassemble, repair, or expose to high heat. Never apply force to the rod or cylinder. If either strut fails to actuat within 5 seconds of switch activation, stop use immediately and have the system diagnosed by a BMW specialist. Improper installation may disable your vehicle's safety systems.
