The front crankshaft oil seal is a precision-engineered component that sits at the interface between the engine block and crankshaft pulley. Disconnect the negative battery terminal to disable electrical systems and prevent accidental starter engagement.

Remove the crankshaft pulley bolt using a socket wrench and breaker bar. You may need to lock the crankshaft using a wooden dowel or breaker bar wedged against the engine block.

Withdraw the pulley and set aside carefully to avoid damaging the hub or tone ring.

Pry out the old seal using a flat-head screwdriver or seal removal tool. Work slowly around the circumference to avoid scoring the crankshaft surface.

Clean the seal bore thoroughly with a lint-free cloth. Inspect the crankshaft surface for nicks or corrosion; light scoring may be polished with fine emery cloth.

Apply a thin film of engine oil to the outer diameter of the new seal and the crankshaft nose for easier installation.

Press the new seal straight into the bore using a seal driver tool (typically available at tool rental counters). Drive it flush with the block face—do not over-strike.

Reinstall the crankshaft pulley and torque the bolt to 89 ft-lb (120 Nm) following OEM specifications. Re-check torque after 5 minutes of running time.

Reconnect the battery, start the engine, and run at idle for 10 minutes. Monitor the timing cover area for any seepage.

Road test at moderate speeds to confirm normal operation. No oil should appear on the drive belt or timing cover after 30 minutes of running.
⚠ Important: If the crankshaft surface shows deep scoring, pitting or corrosion, the seal may not seat properly. Have the crankshaft nose machined or polished by a machine shop before installing a new seal. A poor seal surface is the leading cause of premature failure.
