Installation Notes

Difficulty: Advanced | Time: 6–8 hours

  1. Disconnect battery and remove negative terminal to disable electrical systems.
  2. Remove engine cover and surrounding trim panels for full access to timing cover.
  3. Drain coolant to below water pump level and disconnect hoses.
  4. Remove crankshaft harmonic damper using a balancer puller—do not strike directly.
  5. Unbolt timing chain cover (multiple fasteners and sealant points).
  6. Mark chain position on both sprockets with paint or tape before removal.
  7. Remove old tensioner by unbolting from block; note plunger orientation for reassembly.
  8. Remove old chain and guide arms carefully to avoid sprocket damage.
  9. Install new guide arms first, torque to OEM spec (typically 18–22 Nm for guide arm bolts).
  10. Install new tensioner, ensuring plunger is fully seated and spring-loaded.
  11. Route new chain onto both sprockets, aligning paint marks as reference.
  12. Verify chain slack (approximately 5–10 mm midway between sprockets under light pressure).
  13. Apply fresh gasket sealer to timing cover mating surfaces.
  14. Reinstall timing cover with original bolts in original sequence; do not over-torque.
  15. Reinstall damper and torque to OEM specification (approximately 120 Nm).
  16. Refill coolant to proper level and bleed air from system.
  17. Reconnect battery and start engine, listen for timing chain rattle (should be silent after initial crank).
⚠️ Critical: Intake and exhaust cam sprockets are not included—do not disturb if chain alone is being replaced. Balance shaft chain guide is also separate. Timing misalignment will cause bent valves and catastrophic engine damage. Use a timing light or Land Rover diagnostic scanner (JLR SDD) to confirm valve timing post-installation if you lack OEM torque specifications.
