Installation Notes
Difficulty Level: Intermediate to Advanced
Estimated Time: 4–6 hours (with engine removal)
Tools Required: Full socket set, torque wrench, cylinder head gasket scraper, new head bolts (recommended), gasket sealant, coolant.
- Remove negative battery terminal and drain coolant system completely.
- Disconnect intake and exhaust manifolds, accessory brackets, and all hoses connected to cylinder head.
- Remove cylinder head bolts in reverse order (see service manual for sequence). Do not reuse bolts; new bolts are essential for proper torque retention.
- Lift cylinder head carefully and place on clean workbench. Inspect block deck for damage or scoring.
- Clean block deck and head mating surfaces with gasket scraper and solvent. Surface must be smooth and free of oil.
- Place new gaskets on dowels, aligning 3-hole index perfectly. Do not use gasket sealant on MLS gaskets.
- Install cylinder head and hand-tighten new bolts in correct sequence. Use calibrated torque wrench to tighten in stages: first pass 40 Nm, second pass 60 Nm, final pass 90 Nm (check service manual for your specific engine).
- Reinstall all manifolds, brackets, hoses, and connectors. Refill coolant and bleed air from system.
- Reconnect battery and start engine. Monitor for leaks at gasket line for first 10 minutes of idle.
- Allow engine to reach operating temperature and verify no coolant loss or smoke. Test drive and recheck after cooling.
Critical: Do not reuse old cylinder head bolts. Always install new bolts with every gasket replacement. Failure to do so will result in gasket failure and potential head lift.
