Installation & Notes

Disconnect the negative battery terminal to isolate the electrical system and prevent accidental ignition.

Locate the ignition coils mounted directly on top of each spark plug. On most BMWs, they sit under the plastic engine cover; remove the cover carefully.

Unplug the connector from the top of the coil by pressing the release tab gently.

Remove the mounting bolt (usually 13 mm or 16 mm socket) that secures the coil to the cylinder head.

Withdraw the old coil and inspect the rubber seal beneath it. If cracked or hardened, replace it (usually included in your kit).

Fit the new seal onto the spark plug pocket and insert the new coil, aligning the connector socket upward.

Install and torque the mounting bolt to 10 Nm (7 ft-lbs) on BMW engines. Over-tightening can crack the ceramic insert.

Reconnect the wiring harness until you hear a click—the connector should sit flush.
- Repeat for the second coil.

Reinstall the engine cover, reconnect the negative battery terminal, and start the engine. The ignition system should initialize within 10 seconds.
⚠ Important: Do not apply excessive force when removing or installing coils—the ceramic spark plug pocket can fracture if the coil is twisted or levered sideways. Use a straight vertical pull and push motion only. If you encounter stuck connectors, spray with electrical contact cleaner (WD-40) and wait 5 minutes before gentle pressure.
