Overview
This is the critical crankshaft rear retainer and oil seal assembly fitted to every Land Rover Discovery 4, Range Rover (L405, L460), Range Rover Sport (L494, L461), Range Rover Velar, and Jaguar XF, XJ, XE, and F-TYPE fitted with 3.0L supercharged V6 or 5.0L naturally aspirated/supercharged V8 petrol engines produced between 2009 and 2026.
Over time, the rubber seal compound hardens and loses elasticity due to engine heat cycling, oil degradation, and normal wear. A failing rear crankshaft seal will allow oil to migrate past the seal lip, resulting in slow oil seepage onto the bell housing, gearbox casing, and transmission tunnel. Installation Notes
⚠️ Technical Difficulty: Advanced
This is a professional-level job. The engine must be removed or the gearbox separated to access the rear crankshaft seal. Do not attempt this work without proper equipment, workshop space, and technical knowledge.
Estimated Labour Time: 4–8 hours
- Disconnect negative battery terminal. Wait 15 minutes for electrical systems to discharge.
- Drain engine oil and transmission fluid completely into approved waste containers.
- Remove engine undertray, exhaust system, and ancillary supports as required by your specific model.
- Unbolt and separate the gearbox from the engine bell housing (9–12 bolts, typically 25Nm torque).
- Remove the flywheel or torque converter (model-dependent). Note rotation direction with paint marker.
- Unbolt the rear crankshaft retainer housing (typically 6–8 bolts in a radial pattern, 25Nm torque).
- Carefully pry out the old seal using a flat-blade screwdriver or seal extractor tool. Do not scratch the crankshaft sealing surface.
- Clean the crankshaft sealing surface with lint-free cloth and light solvent. Dry thoroughly.
- Apply a light film of engine oil to the new seal lip and retainer bore.
- Press the new retainer assembly onto the crankshaft using a seal driver tool or press. Ensure even seating. Do not hammer.
- Refit flywheel/torque converter in original orientation. Torque to specification (typically 60Nm).
- Reconnect the gearbox to the engine. Torque bell housing bolts evenly in a star pattern to 25Nm.
- Refit exhaust, undertray, and all supports.
- Refill engine oil to capacity with factory-specification grade (typically Castrol Edge 5W-30).
- Refill transmission fluid to proper level. Check with engine running and gearbox in Park (automatic) or Neutral (manual).
- Start engine. Check for oil leaks around the seal area for 5 minutes running.
- Road test for normal operation. Check oil level again after 20 minutes running.
