- Raise the vehicle safely on a 4-post lift or axle stands and place a suitable drain tray beneath the transmission sump area.
- Loosen the sump pan bolts progressively to allow residual ATF to drain from one corner before fully removing the pan. Drain and dispose of old fluid responsibly.
- Remove the old transmission filter — it typically pulls or unclips downward from the valve body. Note the orientation before removal.
- Clean the transmission valve body mating face thoroughly using a lint-free cloth. Remove all traces of old gasket material — do not use abrasive tools on the valve body face.
- Install the new internal filter, ensuring it seats fully and locks into position. A shallow push or click confirms correct fitment.
- Position the new gasket onto the pan flange, then offer the pan up to the transmission casing. Hand-thread all bolts before torquing in a cross pattern to the ZF specified torque (typically 8–10 Nm — confirm in your workshop manual).
- Refill the transmission with the correct ZF Lifeguard fluid to the manufacturer-specified level via the fill plug. On these platforms, fluid level is typically set at operating temperature — use a diagnostic tool to monitor gearbox temperature during the fill procedure.
- Start the engine and cycle through all gear positions (P–R–N–D) with the vehicle stationary. Check beneath the vehicle for any signs of seeping at the pan joint before returning to service.
⚠ Important: Always use the correct ZF-approved ATF fluid (ZF Lifeguard 6 for 6HP transmissions). Using the wrong fluid type will damage seals and void any warranty. If the gearbox was slipping or exhibiting fault codes prior to this service, carry out a full diagnostic check before assuming this service will resolve the underlying issue — a sump service addresses maintenance and fluid condition, not mechanical wear faults.
