Installation Notes

Installation Difficulty: Intermediate | Time: 2–4 Hours

This is a technical engine timing procedure. If you are not comfortable removing spark plugs, draining coolant, or manipulating precision engine components, we recommend professional installation by a Land Rover–certified or independent specialist.

  1. Drain engine coolant and remove upper radiator hose to access timing cover.
  2. Remove timing cover (typically 6–8 bolts). Set aside gasket.
  3. Lock the crankshaft at TDC (Top Dead Center) using a socket and peg or alignment pin. Mark pulley position with a marker.
  4. Remove old chain tensioner (LR095137 location, typically beneath cover). Drain residual oil into a drain pan.
  5. Release chain tension by slackening the old tensioner arm pivot bolts. Allow slack.
  6. Remove old timing chain by carefully prying it off the sprocket teeth with a plastic pry tool. Avoid sprocket damage.
  7. Unbolt and extract crankshaft sprocket using a pulley puller if necessary. Clean the crankshaft nose of old gasket residue.
  8. Install new crankshaft sprocket (LR025264) onto crankshaft nose. Tighten bolt to 50 Nm (37 ft-lb).
  9. Route new timing chain (LR025263) around sprocket, then thread through guide arm and tensioner arm positions.
  10. Install main timing chain guide (LR025000) and tensioner arm (LR025632) with new bolts provided. Torque as per OEM spec (typically 23–25 Nm).
  11. Install hydraulic tensioner (LR095137) and fill with fresh engine oil per OEM capacity specification.
  12. Verify chain tension by rotating the crankshaft 360° twice. Check for no slack or excessive drag.
  13. Install new timing cover gasket and refit cover with OEM bolts. Torque to 10–12 Nm.
  14. Reconnect radiator hose, top up coolant to specification, and bleed air from the system.
  15. Reinstall spark plugs and any removed air intake components.
  16. Start engine. Listen for abnormal chain noise. If a rattle or grinding persists, stop immediately and recheck timing alignment.
⚠️ Critical: Never rotate the crankshaft without the timing chain and tensioner installed—risk of valve-piston contact and engine damage. If the chain breaks during removal, lock the crankshaft and do not restart. Consult a professional.
