Why the Roof Light Pod V2 changes everything

The Defender L663 has one of the most distinctive rooflines in the automotive world — that flat, utility-driven expanse that speaks to the vehicle's working heritage. But from the factory, it sits empty. The Roof Light Pod V2 transforms that blank canvas into a statement of intent, mounting directly above the windscreen to give your Defender an expedition-ready silhouette that turns heads whether you're in Knightsbridge or the Brecon Beacons.

The Version 2 design brings meaningful improvements over the original: refined aerodynamics that reduce wind noise at motorway speeds, improved LED positioning for a more balanced light spread, and upgraded mounting hardware for a more secure fit. The genuine carbon fibre construction isn't just about looks — it's lightweight enough that you won't notice any change in handling characteristics, yet rigid enough to withstand serious off-road abuse.

At night, the integrated LED light bar floods the area ahead with powerful, even illumination. Controlled via the included wireless remote, you can switch between multiple brightness modes depending on whether you need subtle parking illumination or full-power off-road lighting. It's the piece that makes your Defender look like it was built for adventure — because now it is.

Important

DIY wiring experience is recommended for the electrical connection. If you're not confident with 12V wiring, we recommend professional installation. The mounting itself is straightforward, but clean wiring routing requires patience and care.

Step-by-step installation guide

Step 1

Prepare and clean the mounting surface

Start by thoroughly cleaning the roof area where the pod will mount. Park your Defender in a shaded area — direct sunlight can cause the adhesive to cure too quickly. Using isopropyl alcohol (at least 70% concentration) and a clean microfibre cloth, wipe down the entire mounting zone above the windscreen.

Pay particular attention to any wax, polish, or protective coatings. The 3M adhesive tape needs direct contact with the paint surface to bond properly. Wipe the area at least twice, using a fresh section of cloth each time. Allow to dry completely — this takes around 5 minutes in normal conditions.

Pro tip: If your Defender has a ceramic coating, you may need to lightly abrade the mounting area with a fine Scotch-Brite pad to give the adhesive a mechanical key. Test in an inconspicuous area first.

Step 2

Dry fit and mark the position

Before removing any adhesive backing, position the roof light pod in place to confirm fit and alignment. The pod should sit centred above the windscreen, with equal spacing on both sides. Use your measuring tape to check the distance from each A-pillar.

Once you're happy with the position, use small pieces of low-tack masking tape to mark the corners of the pod's footprint. These marks will guide your final placement when you apply the adhesive. Take your time here — repositioning after the 3M tape contacts the paint is extremely difficult.

Pro tip: Take photos of your dry-fit position from multiple angles. If you accidentally knock the masking tape marks during the next steps, you'll have a visual reference to work from.

Step 3

Plan your wiring route

Before mounting the pod, plan how you'll route the wiring from the roof into the cabin. The cleanest approach runs the wire along the windscreen edge, down the A-pillar trim, and into the fuse box area. You'll need to remove the A-pillar trim panel to access this route.

Use your plastic trim removal tools to gently pry away the A-pillar cover. Start at the bottom and work upward, releasing the clips one at a time. Set the trim piece aside carefully — you'll reinstall it once the wiring is complete.

Identify a suitable entry point where the wire can pass from outside to inside. Many installers use the gap at the top of the A-pillar where it meets the roof seal. Thread a guide wire through first to establish your route.

Step 4

Mount the roof light pod

With your position marked and wiring route planned, you're ready to mount. Remove the protective backing from the 3M adhesive strips on the underside of the pod. Work carefully — once exposed, the adhesive will grab anything it touches.

Align the pod with your masking tape marks and lower it into position. Apply firm, even pressure across the entire footprint for at least 60 seconds. The 3M tape achieves approximately 80% bond strength immediately, but full cure takes 24-72 hours.

Critical: Do not disturb the pod or apply any load to it for at least 24 hours. Avoid washing the vehicle or driving in heavy rain during this curing period. The bond will continue to strengthen over the following days.

Step 5

Route and connect the wiring

Feed the pod's wiring harness down through your planned route. Use cable ties to secure the wire at intervals, keeping it away from any moving parts or sharp edges. Tuck the wire under the windscreen seal where possible for the cleanest appearance.

At the fuse box, you'll connect the positive wire to a switched 12V source using your add-a-fuse tap. This ensures the lights only operate when the ignition is on, preventing accidental battery drain. The negative wire connects to a suitable ground point — any metal bolt that connects directly to the chassis will work.

Test the lights before reinstalling any trim pieces. Use the wireless remote to cycle through the brightness modes and confirm everything operates correctly. Check all connections are secure and there's no strain on any wires.

Step 6

Reinstall trim and final checks

With the wiring tested and working, reinstall the A-pillar trim panel. Press firmly around each clip location until you hear them snap back into place. Check that all gaps are even and the trim sits flush with the surrounding panels.

Give your installation a final inspection: check the pod is sitting level, the wiring is completely hidden, and all trim pieces are properly secured. Test the lights one more time from inside the vehicle using the remote control.

Congratulations — your Defender now has that expedition-ready presence that sets it apart from every other L663 on the road. Remember to avoid washing or applying pressure to the pod for at least 72 hours to allow the adhesive to reach full strength.
