Installation
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5–2.5 hours

Disconnect battery. Locate the negative terminal and remove the cable to disable electrical circuits during work.

Cool the engine. Allow at least 2 hours of cooling before working on the cooling system to avoid burns from residual heat.

Drain coolant. Place a catch pan beneath the radiator drain plug (passenger side, lower corner). Open the plug and allow coolant to drain fully into the pan.

Remove intake ducting. On L405/L494 models, unclip the air intake hose and upper radiator hose bracket to access the housing mounting bolts.

Disconnect the sensor harness. Carefully unplug the three-pin temperature sensor connector from the top of the housing.

Remove the old housing. Using a 10mm socket, remove the four retaining bolts. Lift the housing clear and discard the old gasket.

Clean the mating surface. Use a soft cloth and gasket scraper to remove all traces of old gasket material from the engine block face.

Install new gasket. Place the supplied O-ring gasket into the grooved seat on the housing. Do not apply sealant—the gasket seal is pre-formed.

Position the new housing. Align the four bolt holes and slide the housing into place. Ensure the gasket remains seated.

Torque the bolts. Tighten the bolts in a cross pattern (diagonal sequence) to 20 Nm (15 ft-lb). Verify all bolts are evenly tight.

Reconnect the sensor. Plug the three-pin connector firmly into the sensor. You should hear a distinct click.

Refill coolant. Pour OEM Land Rover coolant (not generic antifreeze) into the expansion tank until the minimum mark is reached. Start the engine briefly and top up as needed.

Bleed air pockets. On some models, you may need to open the cooling system bleed valve (small screw on the heater line) while refilling to release trapped air.

Reconnect the battery. Restore power and allow the engine management system to relearn sensor values (takes approximately 10 seconds after startup).

Test drive. Observe the temperature gauge for 10 minutes of mixed driving. It should stabilise at the mid-point and not fluctuate.
⚠️ Important: Do not open the cooling system while the engine is hot or running under pressure. Coolant can reach 120°C and cause severe burns.
